Chi Nan Temple, Taoist temple in Wenshan District, Taiwan
Chi Nan Temple is a Taoist temple in Wenshan District that sits across multiple levels on the Houshan mountain slopes. The building displays traditional Southern Chinese architecture with detailed stone carvings, red pillars, and curved roofs with upturned eaves.
The temple was founded in 1882, and the Chunyang Chapel was completed in 1890 with support from gold miners in the Jinshan region. This chapel remains one of the main structures within the complex.
The main shrine houses a statue of Lu Dongbin, one of the Eight Immortals, alongside chambers dedicated to the Jade Emperor and Buddhist deities. Visitors can walk through these spaces and see how different traditions come together in the same temple.
The temple can be reached via the Maokong Gondola at Zhinan Temple Station or by bus route 530. The climb involves many stone steps, so comfortable walking shoes and time for breaks are recommended.
A thousand-step stairway connects the temple to Yuanzhen Pond, with an additional three hundred steps leading to the Chunyang Chapel entrance. This extensive network of stairs shapes the entire experience of visiting the site.
