Fuxing District, Mountain indigenous district in Taoyuan, Taiwan.
Fuxing District is a mountain area in eastern Taoyuan home to ten traditional villages nestled in the highlands. The terrain features dense forests, steep slopes, and a landscape that shows little sign of modern development.
The area was designated as Aboriginal Land during Japanese rule, leading to the establishment of a local administrative office in the early 1900s. This designation helped protect Atayal land rights in the decades that followed.
The Atayal people shape daily life here through traditional crafts and farming methods that remain part of the community's routine. You experience this culture directly in local markets and celebrations where traditional music and food are living practices.
Bus services connect the villages to Taoyuan City and other regional transportation hubs. If you plan to hike, bring sturdy shoes and plenty of water, as trails can be steep and extend for long distances.
A highway through the mountains opens access to hiking trails leading to peaks well above 1500 meters with far-reaching views. Many of these routes remain relatively unknown and pass through areas where you encounter few other hikers.
