Taichung city sugar factory, Sugar refinery and historic building in East District, Taichung, Taiwan
Taichung Sugar Factory is a restored industrial complex with production buildings, a white bridge, and fountain area that reflect the site's appearance during its working years. The facility contains exhibition spaces where factory equipment, tools, and documents from Taiwan's sugar industry are displayed.
The factory was established in 1935 under Japanese occupation as Teikoku Sugar Factory and operated continuously until 1993. After closure, it was gradually transformed into a cultural heritage site and officially recognized as such in 2019.
The complex shows how sugar was processed from raw materials and what role this industry played in Taiwan's growth. Visitors encounter old machinery and learn through displayed objects about the work that happened here over decades.
The site is easy to reach and sits at an intersection of two major roads in the city center. Visitors should plan for half a day to a full day to explore the various buildings and exhibitions throughout the complex.
Below the factory grounds lies a historic tunnel system that developed during World War II and is open for visitors to explore today. These underground structures offer insights into the wartime period and Taiwan's industrial past.
