Dongmen Bridge, Steel arch bridge in Taichung, Taiwan.
Dongmen Bridge is a steel arch spanning the Hanxi River in Taichung, Taiwan. Pedestrian areas run along both sides of the four-lane roadway separated by a central divider.
The structure was built in July 2003 after Typhoon Toraji destroyed the previous concrete crossing the year before. Three family members died in that collapse.
The name and the three arch supports honor a family tragedy that occurred when an earlier crossing collapsed during a storm. Visitors cross the structure today as a major traffic route linking two districts while it also serves as a memorial.
The crossing sits on Zhenxing Road and connects East District with Taiping District as a major traffic link. Pedestrians can use the walkways to cross the river and reach both riverside areas.
The structure received the 2008 Golden Road Award for its design honoring three people who died when the earlier construction fell. The form of the three A-shaped supports was chosen to inscribe this memory permanently into the cityscape.
