台北美軍招待所, Military recreation center in downtown Taipei, Taiwan.
The 台北美軍招待所, also known as the Taiwan American Military Recreation Center, is a former leisure facility for US military personnel located in central Taipei, Taiwan. The multi-story building once contained dining areas, a gym, and entertainment rooms reserved for military staff and their families.
The center was set up in the 1950s to serve American troops stationed in Taiwan during a period of close military cooperation between the two sides. When US forces withdrew from Taiwan in 1979, the building gradually fell out of active use.
The building was once off-limits to most local residents, which gave it a reputation as a world apart within the city. Today visitors can walk through and get a sense of how American and Taiwanese daily life briefly overlapped in the same space.
The building is centrally located in Taipei and easy to reach on foot from nearby metro stations. Visiting the exterior is straightforward at any time, though it is worth checking in advance whether the interior is open to the public on the day of your visit.
After the American military left, the building sat largely unused for decades without major renovation, leaving its layout and some original features intact. This makes it one of the few places in Taiwan where the physical traces of that era are still directly readable.
