Tianxiang

Tianxiang sits where the Dasha and Taci Jili Rivers meet to form the Liwu River, surrounded by the marble walls of Taroko Gorge. The settlement lies in one of the few flat areas that allows for buildings and amenities within this steep landscape.

Humans have settled in this location since ancient times because flat ground is scarce within Taroko National Park. This geographical advantage made it a natural hub for communities seeking to establish settlements in the gorge area.

The name Tianxiang replaced the original Taroko indigenous name Tapido, which referred to sugar cane plants that once grew in the area. This linguistic shift reflects how the settlement evolved under different influences over time.

This village is the main stop for travelers visiting Taroko National Park, with restaurants, hotels, and a bus station for onward travel. Arriving early helps you secure accommodation and meals, especially during peak season when visitor numbers are high.

Two multi-level terraces here contain recreation areas and a temple that stands against steep mountain cliffs. This stacked design makes clever use of the limited flat space and creates distinct zones for different activities and experiences.
