Tunnel of Nine Turns, Hiking trail in Xiulin Township, Taiwan.
The Tunnel of Nine Turns is a 700-meter hiking trail winding through a narrow gorge with vertical marble cliffs on both sides, running alongside the rushing waters of the Liwu River. The paved pathway features multiple viewing platforms and safety railings, allowing visitors to safely observe the geological formations.
The path was originally part of the Central Cross-Island Highway until 1996, when completion of the Nine Turns Tunnel eliminated the need for this route as a roadway. After that, the old roadway was converted into a hiking trail for visitors.
The trail displays calligraphy inscriptions carved by notable figures into the marble walls, including four characters by Liang Hanzhao meaning Nine Turns Coiling Dragon. These carvings turn the rock face into an outdoor gallery that visitors encounter as they walk.
The trail requires protective helmets and offers paved pathways with safety railings throughout. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for wet conditions near the river, especially if rain is possible.
The marble walls display natural erosion patterns creating distinctive shapes, while ferns and small plants grow directly from the vertical rock faces. This unusual vegetation makes the gorge feel like a hanging garden of stone and greenery.
