Wunshan Hot Spring, Natural hot spring in Fushi Village, Taiwan
Wunshan Hot Spring is a natural thermal source in Fushi Village that emerges along the banks of the Dasha River, within the Tianxiang Recreation Area. The water flows directly from the rock into open-air pools set against a mountain landscape, with no enclosed facilities on site.
The spring was discovered by a Japanese military officer in the early 1900s and was first called Shenshuei before being renamed in 1960. A large rockslide in 2005 reshaped the surrounding terrain and reduced access to the natural pools for a long period.
Bathing in hot springs is a common habit in this part of Taiwan, and Wunshan draws visitors who want to experience mineral water in an outdoor, natural setting. The riverside location, surrounded by mountains, gives it a character quite different from indoor thermal facilities.
The spring is reached via Provincial Highway 8, and sturdy footwear is strongly recommended because the riverside terrain can be uneven and slippery. Since everything is outdoors, bringing sun protection or rain gear depending on the season makes the visit more comfortable.
The water at Wunshan contains carbonic acid, which is relatively rare among Taiwan's natural thermal sources, as most others in the region are sulfuric. This gives the water a faintly fizzy sensation on the skin when bathing, which visitors often notice straight away.
