Xizhi Gongbei Temple, Taoist temple on Sanxiu Mountain in Xizhi District, Taiwan
Xizhi Gongbei Temple is a Taoist sanctuary on Sanxiu Mountain in Xizhi District that encompasses a series of buildings and outdoor spaces arranged on the hillside. Stone lanterns line the pathways, and an arched bridge links different sections of the religious compound.
The sanctuary was founded in 1906 during Japanese rule over Taiwan, marking this era in the island's past. It has undergone four major reconstructions, with the most recent renovation finishing in 1966.
The temple is dedicated to Lü Dongbin, a revered figure in Taoist tradition known locally as Hianggong, and serves as a spiritual center for the community. Visitors can observe the living Chinese religious practices that shape how people interact with the space throughout the year.
The temple sits on Sanxiu Mountain, an elevated location reached on foot by several pathways that require a bit of walking and stairs. The main entrance is on Xiwan Road, and travelers can most easily reach the grounds from Xizhi railway station.
From November to December, red maple trees surrounding the grounds transform the landscape into warm autumn tones and draw many visitors to the site. This seasonal shift makes these months a favorite time for photography and walking the pathways.
