Xizhi District, Administrative district in New Taipei City, Taiwan
Xizhi is an administrative district in New Taipei City between Taipei and Keelung, stretching across a wide valley. The area includes both residential neighborhoods with multistory buildings and older quarters with lower houses along the rivers.
The Ketagalan people originally used the area and called it Kypanas before Han settlers arrived in 1758 and named it Tsui-tng-ka. During Japanese rule the place received the name Shiodome and developed as a link between port cities and the capital.
The name comes from a Hokkien term meaning water channel, describing the valley shape formed by rivers running through the area. Visitors notice small shops selling regional snacks and local markets where people buy fresh vegetables in the morning along the older streets.
Several train stations are spread across the district and connect the area with surrounding cities in less than half an hour. Highways run through the valley and make access by car easier, especially to the less dense neighborhoods.
Several international technology companies such as Acer Group and Garmin Asia established their headquarters in the district. These buildings concentrate along the main traffic arteries and form a center for electronics and navigation.
