大溪河階群, Geological formation in Daxi District, Taiwan
The Daxi River Terrace Group is a series of stepped elevations formed along the river valley through tectonic uplift combined with river erosion over time. These terraces display distinct levels that represent different phases of geological development in the western part of the island.
These terraces began forming during the Holocene epoch as tectonic activity lifted the land in this region. Continuous uplift combined with river erosion gradually created the stepped structures visible today.
Scientists and researchers regularly visit these geological formations to study the complex tectonic processes that continue to shape the Taiwan landscape.
The site is best visited during dry seasons when paths to the different levels are easily passable. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the ground is uneven and can be steep in places.
The sediment layers within these terraces preserve records of environmental changes and ancient river patterns reaching back thousands of years. These layers allow researchers to reconstruct the landscape history of the region layer by layer.
