Dawan Guanghu Temple, Religious temple in Yongkang District, Tainan, Taiwan
Dawan Guanghu Temple is a temple in Yongkang District, Tainan, dedicated to the deity Guanghui Shengwang. Its walls are covered with ceramic murals, and its wooden beams carry painted motifs that follow the traditional style of southern Taiwan temple architecture.
The temple was founded in 1679, making it one of the oldest in Yongkang District. During the Japanese colonial period, many of its religious objects were lost, which led to reconstruction efforts by the local community in later years.
During the biennial festival, the temple becomes a gathering place where families watch children dressed in traditional clothes ride elaborate floats shaped like centipedes through neighboring streets.
The temple sits on Dawan Road and is open every day. Going in the early morning or late afternoon gives you more space to walk around and take in the details without crowds.
The original statue of Guanghui Shengwang, brought from Fujian province in China, survived World War II because it was hidden in a private home during the conflict. It can still be seen inside the temple today.
