Union of Lublin Mound, Historical monument on Castle Hill, Lviv, Ukraine.
The Union of Lublin Mound is an artificial earth mound on the grounds of High Castle in Lviv, Ukraine, topped by an observation platform. It rises clearly above the surrounding hilltop and can be spotted from many parts of the city below.
Polish residents of Lviv began building the mound in 1869 to mark 300 years since the union of Poland, Lithuania, and Ruthenia. The work took over two decades and was completed in 1890.
A stone near the mound carries coats of arms and inscriptions recalling the joining of Poland, Lithuania, and Ruthenia. Visitors can read these markings and connect them to the wider story of the city they are standing in.
The mound is reached on foot from the Old Town by following the path up through High Castle park, so comfortable shoes are a good idea. The observation platform is open year-round, and clear days give the best views over the city.
The project was personally initiated and funded by Franciszek Smolka, a politician who put his own money into making it happen. Without his backing, the mound on the castle hill would likely never have been built.
