Union of Lublin Mound, Historical monument on Castle Hill, Lviv, Ukraine.
The Union of Lublin Mound is an artificial earth mound standing about 29 meters high atop High Castle with an observation platform at its summit. From this vantage point, visitors can see across the entire city and surrounding landscape.
This mound was constructed between 1869 and 1890 by Polish residents to commemorate three centuries since the union of Poland, Lithuania, and Ruthenia took place. The artificial hill marks a pivotal moment that reshaped the political structure of the region.
A stone near the mound displays emblems and text that commemorate how Poland, Lithuania, and Ruthenia came together as equal partners. Visitors can see these symbols and understand the significance of this union for the people of the region.
The mound sits atop High Castle and is best reached on foot from the Old Town, making for a pleasant walk uphill. The observation platform at the top is accessible year-round and offers the clearest views during fair weather.
The mound was personally initiated and financed by Franciszek Smolka, a prominent politician of the time. His financial backing made possible this ambitious project crowning the castle summit.
