Shevchenko Park, Public garden in Dnipro, Ukraine
Shevchenko Park is a large green area in the center of Dnipro, Ukraine, laid out with wide tree-lined paths, fountains, ponds, and open lawns. The grounds are divided into several areas, including chess corners, outdoor cafes, and viewpoints that look out over the Dnieper River.
The land was first laid out as a private garden in 1790 by a Cossack officer, then passed to a local nobleman who expanded it. During the 20th century it was opened to the public and eventually renamed after the Ukrainian national poet.
The park takes its name from Taras Shevchenko, the Ukrainian poet who became a national symbol long before the renaming took place. Today, open-air concerts and public events are held here regularly, and the Student Palace on the park's edge serves as a venue for performances.
The park is easy to explore on foot, and the wide paths make it simple to move from one area to another. Those looking for a view of the Dnieper River should head toward the higher ground near the park's edge, where the river comes into view.
Below the park's surface there are underground tunnels left over from the structures built during its time as a private estate. Above ground, tulip trees and ginkgo specimens grow here, two species rarely seen in this part of Ukraine.
