Tarkhankut Lighthouse, Maritime lighthouse on Cape Tarkhankut, Crimea
Tarkhankut Lighthouse is a white limestone structure standing on the westernmost point of Crimea's Tarkhankut Peninsula, overlooking Black Sea shipping lanes. The cylindrical tower reaches about 38 meters in height and is surrounded by three keeper houses that form part of the complex.
Construction of this lighthouse began in 1816 using stone quarried from Inkermann and transported by barge, with the station becoming operational in 1817. It was built to serve as a crucial navigation aid for increasing Black Sea maritime traffic.
The lighthouse marks an important location in Black Sea maritime traditions. The keeper houses nearby show how people once lived while tending to this coastal landmark.
Visitors can reach an observation platform by climbing a spiral staircase that winds through the tower, offering views across the Black Sea and surrounding peninsula. The best time to visit is during warmer months when weather conditions are more stable and the climb is more comfortable.
In 1883 a compressed air fog signal system was added to assist ships during periods of poor visibility. This innovative technology was a notable advancement in ship safety for its era.
