Половиця, Underground river in central Dnipro, Ukraine
The Polovyzia is an underground river in central Dnipro that flows through a tunnel system constructed with brick from the 19th century beneath Yavornytsky Avenue. The network extends for approximately five kilometers and manages water flow under the city center.
The river was first diverted in 1884 when engineers built a collector system to control water flow through the expanding city center. These early modifications laid the foundation for the modern underground network that exists today.
The river flows beneath a park that was once a Cossack's garden and now serves as a green gathering place with its water reservoir. Locals use this space for walks and as a refuge from the urban surroundings.
The tunnel system can become strained during summer storms when water levels rise significantly, so visitors should watch for warning signs and any closures. The best time to explore is during drier periods when the underground passages are more accessible.
The tunnel network displays layers of different construction periods, with ancient brick walls standing alongside modern drainage pipes of varying diameters. This blend of old and new engineering reveals how the city adapted its water systems over many decades.
