Національний історико-археологічний заповідник «Ольвія», Ancient Greek archaeological site in Mykolaiv Oblast, Ukraine
Olvia National Historical and Archaeological Reserve is an ancient Greek settlement on the northern Black Sea coast, with ruins spread across a large area. Excavations have revealed fortification walls, residential areas, cemeteries, and workshops that show how a prosperous port city was organized.
The settlement was founded in the 6th century BCE by Greek colonists and became a major trade center on the northern Black Sea. It remained inhabited for roughly 800 years before being abandoned in late antiquity.
The site reveals how Greek colonists lived through everyday objects like pottery, tools, and jewelry discovered in excavations. These items show a community focused on trade, craftsmanship, and family life.
The site is open year-round and includes a museum, a stone lapidarium display, and a research library for visitors. Wear sturdy shoes since the ground is uneven and you will need to walk across large areas.
The reserve includes not only the main city but also nearby Berezan Island, which functioned as a separate Greek outpost. Together these two places show how the Greeks established multiple settlements to control their trade routes.
