Essex

Essex is a ceremonial county in the east of England, stretching between the Thames estuary and the North Sea coastline and encompassing both rural countryside and suburban areas near London. The region formed in the sixth century as the Kingdom of the East Saxons and later became part of Anglo-Saxon England. Colchester had already served as one of the main settlements on the island during Roman times and remained an important center for centuries afterward.

The pier at Southend stretches more than 2 kilometers (1.3 miles) into the Thames estuary and holds the title of the longest pleasure pier in the world. At the end of this walkway sits a small lifeboat station, reachable by a narrow-gauge railway that carries visitors along the full length.
