Essex is a ceremonial county in the east of England, stretching between the Thames estuary and the North Sea coastline and encompassing both rural countryside and suburban areas near London. The pier at Southend stretches more than 2 kilometers (1.3 miles) into the Thames estuary and holds the title of the longest pleasure pier in the world. At the end of this walkway sits a small lifeboat station, reachable by a narrow-gauge railway that carries visitors along the full length.
