Wildwood, exurban suburb of St. Louis, located in far western St. Louis County, Missouri, United States
Wildwood is a city in St. Louis County, Missouri, located on the western edge of the St. Louis metropolitan area. It is made up largely of single-family homes set among trees, with wide residential streets running through a heavily wooded landscape.
Wildwood was incorporated as a city in 1995, after residents of several unincorporated communities in western St. Louis County joined together to block large-scale development plans. The move gave local residents direct control over land use decisions in the area.
Wildwood takes its name from the wooded land that surrounds nearly every street and yard. Walking or driving through it, you quickly notice that trees are treated as part of the neighborhood, not just decoration.
A car is the most practical way to get around, as public transit options are limited and distances between different parts of the city can be long. Walking works well on quieter residential streets, where you can get a closer look at the wooded surroundings.
Despite being a city, Wildwood has no traditional downtown or central commercial district. What holds it together as a place is not a shared square or main street, but the residents' collective decision to shape how the land around them would develop.
