Westport, Coastal town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States.
Westport is a town in southwestern Connecticut that spreads where the Saugatuck River meets Long Island Sound. The community includes residential neighborhoods, waterfront beaches, and a center with shops and restaurants along several main roads.
The community formed in 1835 from parts of Fairfield, Norwalk, and Weston after being previously known as Saugatuck. During the 19th century, the place grew with cotton manufacturing that replaced harbor trade.
The area around the Saugatuck River has long attracted artists and writers who settled there. Along the coast and shopping streets, you see today a mix of colonial-style homes and modern shops that shape the daily life of residents.
The train connection to Manhattan takes about an hour and runs regularly via Metro-North Railroad. Those visiting the coast will find several public beach access points with parking nearby.
During the 20th century, a community of theater and film professionals settled in the area, an influence that continues today. The Westport Country Playhouse was built inside a converted barn and has drawn visitors for decades.
