Potomac, Census-designated place in Montgomery County, United States

Potomac is a census-designated place in Montgomery County, Maryland, covering roughly 69 square kilometers of land. Residential neighborhoods define the area near Washington DC, where over 47,000 people live.

Edward Offutt received a 600-acre land grant called Clewerwell from Lord Baltimore in 1714, marking the first settlement here. This grant laid the foundation for what would later grow into the residential area today.

Residents rely on two postal codes depending on address type, with 20854 serving physical properties and 20859 reserved exclusively for post office boxes. Phone prefixes 240 and 301 connect households to the wider region.

Streets run mainly between residential neighborhoods, linking separate parts of the area to one another. Driving is the common way to move through this spread-out community.

The German School Washington DC draws families from abroad and teaches in two languages. Winston Churchill High School, one of the secondary schools here, served as inspiration for television producer Darren Star.
