Brooklyn Army Terminal, Military warehouse in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, US
Brooklyn Army Terminal is a huge warehouse complex with two large halls, three piers, and several administrative buildings made of concrete at the port in Sunset Park. The site stretches over a large area along the water and contains long corridors inside that connect different storage rooms.
Cass Gilbert designed the site in 1918 and it was finished the following year as a supply base for the army. During World War Two, millions of tons of military equipment left the US from here toward Europe.
Sunset Park takes its name from the waterfront location where piers have received ships for over a century. Today people work in small workshops and offices where soldiers and dock workers once packed and loaded military goods.
The complex sits close to several subway stations and can also be reached by bus or ferry. Those wanting to see the buildings from outside can walk along the water where the massive concrete walls and old piers are clearly visible.
An atrium in one of the buildings shows suspended bridges and old railway tracks that allowed transport of heavy loads between different floors. This construction helped move supplies quickly when ships docked at the pier.
