Mount Pocono, borough of Pennsylvania
Mount Pocono is a borough in Monroe County, Pennsylvania, set among the wooded hills of the Pocono Mountains. It is made up of scattered residential streets, a small downtown area with local shops, and a mix of services spread across gently rolling land.
The area grew in the 19th century after railroad lines brought city visitors from the East Coast into the mountain region. Over the following decades, guesthouses and summer retreats gave way to more permanent neighborhoods.
Mount Pocono sits in the heart of the Pocono Mountains and draws many visitors from New York and Philadelphia looking for a break from city life. The surrounding hills and woods shape the feel of the place, giving it a noticeably rural and unhurried pace.
Getting there by car is the most practical option, as the area is rural and public transport connections are limited. Comfortable walking shoes are a good idea if you plan to explore the surrounding trails and wooded paths.
Although Mount Pocono is now mostly known as a stopover point, the wider Pocono region was once famous as a honeymoon destination for couples from New York and New Jersey, with resorts built around heart-shaped bathtubs and other novelties. Some of those resorts operated well into the late 20th century.
