The Southeast includes twelve states stretching from Maryland in the north to Florida in the south and westward to Arkansas. The landscape ranges from the Appalachian Mountains to flat coastal plains and subtropical wetlands along the Gulf Coast.
European settlers established Jamestown in 1607 as the first permanent colony along the Atlantic coast. The area later became the center of the Civil War and the civil rights movement in the 20th century.

The dividing line between the Upper South and Deep South runs through this area, and accents and cooking styles shift noticeably over relatively short distances. Kudzu, an invasive climbing plant from Japan, covers trees and abandoned buildings and has altered the landscape for decades.
