The township, incorporated on April 10, 1843, originated from land that belonged to the Hackensack tribe of the Lenape Native Americans and was later purchased by Peter Stuyvesant in 1658.

The population of 63,361 residents includes a substantial Hispanic and Latino community, representing 70 percent of the township's inhabitants according to the 2020 census.

Bergenline Avenue extends through the township as one of New Jersey's longest commercial corridors, offering numerous retail establishments and merchant services with reduced sales tax rates.

The township maintains direct access to Manhattan's skyline views while providing urban amenities through its designation as an Urban Enterprise Zone.
