Nederlander Theatre, Gothic Revival theatre in The Loop, Chicago, US
The Nederlander Theatre is a Gothic Revival theatre building in The Loop district of Chicago that features mosaic artwork and Far Eastern decorations. In the foyer and entrance halls, multicolored Buddha statues stand alongside depictions of princes and princesses.
The venue opened in 1926 as the Oriental Theatre and served initially as a movie palace and vaudeville stage. Since 1978 it has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The original Oriental Theatre name reflects the Far Eastern design elements still visible in decorations and wall paintings throughout the building. Large musical productions regularly perform here, drawing audiences from across the region.
The entrance is located at 24 West Randolph Street, and seating is distributed across multiple floors with over 2000 seats in total. The venue hosts theatre performances and musicals throughout the year.
The building was originally constructed as a Masonic temple and later converted. The combination of Gothic elements with Far Eastern motifs remains visible today.
