Hauppauge is an unincorporated community in western Suffolk County, New York, encompassing residential neighborhoods and commercial districts. The area includes the Hauppauge Industrial Park, which hosts numerous businesses and serves as a major employment center for the region.

The Wheeler family established a residence in the area before 1753, marking the start of formal settlement. This early settlement laid the foundation for the community that developed later.

The name comes from a Native American language referring to freshwater springs that sustained indigenous communities here. This connection to water sources shaped the area's early identity.

Visit during weekday mornings or afternoons to see both residential areas and the bustling commercial zones. The area is best explored by car, as public transportation options are limited in this spread-out community.

Though technically an unincorporated community without formal municipal government, Hauppauge hosts numerous Suffolk County government offices. This is surprising since the county seat is located elsewhere.
