Astoria Center of Israel
Astoria Center of Israel, Conservative synagogue in Astoria Queens, US
The Astoria Center of Israel is a two-story brick synagogue with cast stone details, Ionic columns, and rounded arch windows along Crescent Street. The architect Louis Allen Abramson completed it in 1926, creating a structure that stands out through its classical proportions and stonework.
The building originated from Mishkan Israel, a Jewish assembly founded in the 1880s that served a growing community. Its completion in 1926 marked when the congregation established a permanent home in the Astoria neighborhood.
The synagogue is where the local Jewish community gathers for worship and celebrates life events together throughout the year. You will see familiar faces returning regularly, making it a steady presence in the neighborhood's social fabric.
The building is easy to reach by public transit and sits in an active residential neighborhood with shops and restaurants nearby. Visitors should know that some areas may only be open during services, and modest clothing is expected when entering.
French artist Louis Pierre Rigal painted striking interior murals shortly after the building opened. Many visitors miss these artworks, which add a distinct visual richness to the worship space.
