Bank of America Plaza, Office skyscraper in Charlotte, North Carolina, US
Bank of America Plaza is a 40-story glass and steel office tower in downtown Charlotte, North Carolina, standing about 503 feet (153 meters) tall. The lower floors include retail spaces that open directly to the street and connect to the city's indoor pedestrian network.
The tower opened in 1974 as the headquarters of North Carolina National Bank and held the title of the state's tallest building for over a decade. It has since changed names several times, following the mergers that shaped American banking in the following years.
The ground floor connects to a covered walkway network that links several downtown buildings together. Office workers and visitors use these indoor passages daily to move through the city center without going outside.
The building sits in the heart of downtown Charlotte and is easy to reach on foot from surrounding offices, hotels, and transit stops. Ground-floor retail spaces are accessible directly from the street, and the on-site parking makes it convenient for those arriving by car.
Despite carrying the Bank of America name for decades, the bank itself has never been headquartered in the building. The name is the result of a long chain of rebranding following banking mergers, not of a direct ownership history tied to the tower.
