Blennerhassett Island, River island in Wood County, United States.
Blennerhassett Island is a river island in Wood County where two waterways meet and form natural boundaries in the landscape. The main building is a neoclassical mansion with three floors that looks out over the water and holds objects from early American life.
An Irish aristocrat built a grand mansion here in 1798, which later became connected to Aaron Burr's expedition. This expedition stirred controversy during the early years of the American nation.
The name comes from Harman Blennerhassett, the Irish aristocrat who made this place his home. Today the mansion operates as a museum where you can see how the family lived and how servants moved through the rooms.
The island is reached by sternwheeler boat from Point Park in Parkersburg, with service running from May through late October. Keep in mind that the boat ride is a significant part of the visit, and good weather makes the trip more enjoyable.
The mansion on the island is a reconstruction of the original building and shows how it appeared before being destroyed. The rebuilding was based on careful historical records and plans that allowed the original design to be recreated.
