Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, hospital in New York City, United States
Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center is a large medical facility in Brooklyn with more than 500 beds and multiple specialty departments. The complex includes emergency services, outpatient clinics, surgical centers, a dental clinic, and specialized units for stroke care, maternity services, and mental health treatment.
The hospital was founded in 1921 as Brownsville and East New York Hospital with 75 beds serving local neighborhoods. It became Beth-El Hospital in 1932, then Brookdale Hospital in 1964, and received its current name in 1971 when it was designated a teaching institution.
The facility operates as a Level II trauma center with round-the-clock emergency services and outpatient clinics spread across Brooklyn neighborhoods. Wide corridors and clear signage help visitors navigate the large complex, though expect longer wait times during busy periods.
The hospital opened Brooklyn's first long-term AIDS center in 1993, now known as the Treatment for Life Center, pioneering care services in the community. During Hurricane Sandy in 2012, it served as a critical resource for affected patients and received state funding to support recovery efforts.
