Camp Watonka, Science summer camp in Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania, US

Camp Watonka was a facility on about 100 acres in Wayne County equipped with science laboratories, modern cabins, and a spring-fed lake. The grounds included specialized buildings such as physics labs, computer stations, and a ropes course facility.

The site was established in 1963 and held significance as the sole American Camp Association accredited science camp for boys in the United States. It operated until 2019, ending a long period of specialized science instruction for young students.

This site served as a hub for science education where young people engaged hands-on with topics like renewable energy, architecture, and quantum mechanics. Such practical learning shaped how the camp saw itself and attracted students eager to go beyond standard classroom instruction.

The camp was located about 5 kilometers from Hawley and was easy to reach from surrounding areas. Program lengths varied based on the age and learning needs of students who attended.

The camp had a darkroom for photography and an advanced ropes course system that few similar facilities offered. These added facilities enabled instruction that went beyond standard science subjects.
