Clemuel Ricketts Mansion
Clemuel Ricketts Mansion, Georgian mansion near Ganoga Lake, Pennsylvania, United States.
The Clemuel Ricketts Mansion is a Georgian-style mansion with two-and-a-half stories in an L-shaped configuration, built from sandstone and situated on the shore of Ganoga Lake. The structure features exceptionally thick walls designed for durability and shows the architectural character of its era.
The mansion was built between 1852 and 1855 and initially served as a hunting lodge and tavern before transitioning to a hotel and post office role. Its multiple functions throughout the 1800s reflect how such properties operated as hubs for commerce and community.
The property was once known as the North Mountain House hotel and drew visitors seeking leisure activities and relaxation by the lake. It functioned as a gathering place for people escaping city life to enjoy outdoor pursuits.
The property now serves as headquarters for the Ganoga Lake Association and is not open to the public for tours. Visitors can still appreciate the building's exterior and the scenic lakeside setting from the surrounding area.
The property hosted one of the country's earliest educational initiatives when Joseph Rothrock conducted a summer school program there in 1876 and 1877. This unusual use reveals how private estates at the time also served as venues for intellectual gatherings.
