Eagles Mere Historic District, Summer resort district in Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, United States.
Eagles Mere Historic District is a mountain resort area in the Allegheny Mountains with more than 200 buildings arranged around a natural lake at about 2,100 feet elevation. The settlement includes homes, churches, and shops dating mostly from around 1900.
The area shifted from farming to a mountain resort destination in the late 1800s, drawing wealthy families from Philadelphia and New York to settle here. Most buildings were constructed during the decades following this change.
The homes display late 1800s architectural styles like Queen Anne and Victorian designs that you notice walking through the district. These building choices shaped how the place looks and feels as a whole community.
The lake is surrounded by a construction-free zone that protects the natural shoreline and water quality for visitors to enjoy. Plan to spend time exploring the different areas around the water since the district spreads across a fairly large area.
Around a dozen homes date directly from an 1897 educational meeting, a rare surviving example of buildings from that gathering. Over 40 similar homes were built shortly after, shaping much of how the district looks today.
