Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, medical school
Cooper Medical School of Rowan University is a medical education and hospital building in Camden, New Jersey. The six-story main building at the corner of Broadway and Benson Street holds classrooms, labs, research spaces, and study areas, while a separate clinical skills center sits at Broadway and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
The school opened in 2012 as a partnership between Cooper University Health Care and Rowan University. It was the first new medical school to open in New Jersey in more than 35 years and received full accreditation in 2016.
The school bears the name Cooper from the hospital it works with closely. The spaces bring together students and patients in ways that encourage learning and human connection in medical care.
The main building and clinical spaces are located at prominent intersections in central Camden and are easy to find. Visitors should know that the school is actively in use by students and staff, with teaching and research activities happening regularly throughout the building.
Students begin working with real patients in an affiliated clinic starting in the third week of their first year rather than just studying textbooks. This early hands-on experience sets the school apart from many other medical training programs and prepares graduates more quickly for actual patient situations.
