Quảng Bình, Province in North Central Coast, Vietnam
Quảng Bình is a province in the North Central Coast region of Vietnam, stretching across a wide area between the Annamite Range and the coast. The territory includes forested mountain slopes to the west, flat agricultural plains in the center, and a long sandy coastal strip to the east.
The area belonged to the Champa kingdom until 1069, when Vietnamese forces captured it and incorporated it into their own realm. It then developed into a border zone that retained military importance for centuries and was contested multiple times.
The name comes from old military terms referring to defense lines along the coast. Local communities often gather in the market areas of towns, where regional specialties and crafts from mountain villages are sold.
The provincial capital Đồng Hới serves as a central starting point for trips into surrounding regions, with road and rail connections north and south. Those heading to mountain areas should allow extra travel time, as roads are winding and less developed.
Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park contains some of the largest caves in the world, including systems that extend for several kilometers beneath the surface. Some of these underground chambers are large enough to hold entire city blocks.
