Perfume Pagoda

The Perfume Pagoda is a complex of temples and shrines in the limestone Huong Son Mountains in northern Vietnam. The route leads over water and steep paths to the Huong Tich Cave, a large chamber with rock formations and several prayer sites inside.

The temple complex was built in the 15th century under the reign of Le Thanh Tong. Local tradition tells of a monk who is said to have discovered the sacred cave many centuries earlier.

At the start of the lunar new year, worshippers come here to pray at the shrines for health and good fortune for their families. Many light incense sticks and leave small offerings at the altars along the path through the mountains.

Visitors first take small rowing boats up the river and then climb narrow steps through the forest to the cave. Sturdy shoes are needed as some sections can be slippery, and the ascent takes about an hour.

In the main cave, limestone formations hang and rise that visitors have named after fertility and blessings. Some people touch certain rocks while quietly whispering their wishes.
