Mã Pí Lèng Pass is a mountain pass in Ha Giang Province that winds through limestone peaks at elevations between 1500 and 2000 meters. The route connects the towns of Dong Van and Meo Vac across northern Vietnam's dramatic terrain.
Between 1959 and 1965, local workers built the QL4C road through the pass, transforming a traditional horse trail into a motorized route. This construction period changed how people accessed the remote mountain towns.
The name comes from the Hmong language and means "horse's back ridge," referring to the distinctive shape of the mountain spine visible from below. Locals use this term to describe the terrain's natural form when approaching from the river valley.
The best time to visit is September when rice fields turn golden and visibility is clear on the mountain roads. Travelers should be prepared for tight curves and high altitude conditions, which require careful attention and good physical stamina.
The road traces nine sharp hairpin curves along the Nho Que River, which cuts dramatically through the limestone canyon below. This river gorge creates one of the most striking natural backdrops for the journey.
