Harra es-Sawad

Harra es-Sawad is a volcanic field in southeastern Yemen formed by hundreds of cinder cones scattered across a wide area. The landscape displays numerous dark lava flows and crater openings that shape the terrain noticeably.

The volcanic field formed through repeated volcanic activity spanning geological time periods. The region was a center of intense magmatic activity in prehistoric times, creating the black lava landscape visible today.

Local communities in the region maintain traditional Yemeni practices while living near this extensive volcanic landscape that shapes their daily activities.

The terrain is rough and volcanic, so sturdy footwear and plenty of water are essential. The best time to explore is during cooler months when heat is less intense.

The volcanic field contains numerous uneroded cones situated above faulted basement limestone, reaching an elevation of 1,737 meters above sea level.
