Bandipur, Hill settlement in Tanahun District, Nepal.
Bandipur is a hill settlement in Tanahun District situated around 1,030 meters elevation and defined by slate-paved streets and neoclassical buildings. The village spans across the Mahabharat Range with a compact layout that shows its historical development as a trade center.
The settlement transformed from a Magar village into a major trading hub along the India-Tibet route following the 1768 conquest by Prithvi Narayan Shah. This shift enabled its growth and the development of the architectural character visible in the village today.
The settlement displays Newari architectural traditions through covered verandas running along the main street and traditional wooden structures decorated with detailed carvings. This heritage remains active in daily life, visible as people move through these shaded walkways and interact with the crafted facades.
The settlement is accessible by regular bus services from both Kathmandu and Pokhara, with journeys from the capital taking about four hours. The village center is pedestrian-friendly, so visitors should prepare for walking and be aware of the hilly terrain.
The settlement offers over 120 hotels and a handful of community homestays, allowing visitors to connect with local residents. From accommodations here, guests overlook the Marsyangdi Valley extending about 700 meters below.
