Ida Rieu School, Educational institute for blind and deaf students in Numaish, Karachi, Pakistan
Ida Rieu School is an educational complex in Karachi with multiple buildings including an Administrative Block and two specialized schools for deaf and blind students. The facility offers instruction from preschool through college level with specialized equipment such as Braille keyboards and voice-activated devices.
The school was founded in 1922 and named after Ida Augusta Rieu, wife of J.L. Rieu who was serving as Commissioner of Sindh at the time. The institution later expanded and became an important educational center for students with hearing and visual impairments.
The school is a place where national holidays like Defence Day and religious occasions such as Eid celebrations are marked with student performances. Visitors can experience shows featuring songs, skits, and tableaus that demonstrate how students engage in community cultural life.
The campus houses around 900 students from age four onward with varying learning needs and offers instruction supported by modern assistive technology. Visitors should contact the school in advance to understand the layout of different buildings and prepare for the specialized facilities.
In 2006 the school launched its first master's degree program in partnership with the University of Karachi. This achievement opened higher education pathways for visually impaired students that were previously unavailable to them.
