The Igreja de Santa Clara features interior walls and ceilings completely covered in gilded woodwork from the early eighteenth century.
The construction of this Catholic church commenced in 1416 for the Order of Poor Clares nuns and reached completion in 1457.
The church contains exceptional examples of Portuguese Baroque carving with Renaissance elements, including Salomonic columns and Corinthian capitals.
The church opens daily from 9:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 18:00, with an entrance fee of 4 euros, while children under 10 enter free.
A recent restoration project unveiled hidden wooden paintings of saints and angel artwork beneath decorative elements, adding to the church's historical record.
