Crna Trava Municipality, Municipal administrative center in Jablanica District, Serbia.
Crna Trava Municipality is an administrative division in the Jablanica District, in southern Serbia, surrounded by forested mountains and deep valleys. It sits within the Vlasina highlands, where dense woodland and open plateaus shape the land.
The area saw organized settlement during the medieval reign of the Serbian king Milutin, when religious buildings were constructed and community life took shape. In the 20th century, large-scale movement to cities led to a dramatic drop in the number of people living here.
Builders from this area were once known across Serbia and the former Yugoslavia for their skill in construction work. This tradition is still visible today in the sturdy, simple houses found in the few remaining villages.
The area is reachable by road from larger towns in the region, but infrastructure is basic and facilities are very limited. Anyone visiting should stock up on essentials before arriving, as shops and services are rare throughout the municipality.
The name Crna Trava means 'black grass' in Serbian, most likely a reference to the dark, dense woodland that covers the highlands. This makes it one of the more unusual place names among Serbian municipalities.
