Vaygach Island, Arctic island between Barents and Kara seas, Russia
Vaygach Island is an oval-shaped landmass in the Arctic region positioned between two major seas. The terrain is relatively flat with parallel ridges rising to about 170 meters above the surface.
Russian mariners discovered this Arctic island during the 16th century, opening it to outside knowledge. Over time it became part of the administrative region of the Nenets people.
The Nenets people left sacred sites on the island, particularly at Cape Bolvansky Nos, where wooden figures and stone formations still bear witness to their spiritual traditions.
Varnek is the only inhabited settlement on the island and serves as the main point of access. Be prepared for extreme seasonal variations and harsh Arctic conditions when visiting.
The island contains many small lakes and rivers with rapids that shape its landscape. These waterways support the walrus and seal populations that inhabit the surrounding waters.
