Anadyr, Maritime port in Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Russia.
Anadyr port sits on the southern shore of the Anadyr River estuary, where the river meets the Bering Sea. It has docks, storage areas, and zones for fish processing and general cargo handling.
A trading post was founded here in 1889 on the banks of the Anadyr River, and the port gradually took shape over the following decades. During the Soviet period, it became a key stop on the Northern Sea Route, with infrastructure growing to support fishing and supply runs across the Russian Far East.
The port is the main supply point for the remote communities of the Chukchi Peninsula, as road connections are almost nonexistent. Most everyday goods, from food to building materials, arrive here by sea.
The port is open year-round, but ice covers the estuary from December through May, so shipping relies on icebreaker support during those months. Visitors should prepare for extreme cold and strong winds, as weather conditions can shift quickly at this latitude.
Although Anadyr is reachable only by plane or ship, this port is the sole maritime outlet for the entire peninsula, with no road connecting it to the rest of Russia. That means nearly all cargo entering the region passes through this single point.
