Каратаг, Volcanic mountain in Khakassia, Russia.
Mount Karatag is a volcanic mountain in Khakassia rising to 651 meters, part of the Kuznetsk Alatau system in the region's north. The peak sits near the village of Bolshoye Ozero and overlooks three nearby lakes.
This volcanic cone formed in ancient geological times and served as a landmark for settlements in the area. Archaeological finds show people built burial sites and stone structures here between 800 BCE and 400 CE.
The southeast slope displays ancient rock carvings of a white horse, showing artistic traditions of people who lived here long ago.
The mountain is accessible from Krasnoyarsk but lies in a remote area with limited facilities, so planning ahead is important. Visit during warmer months when paths and access routes are most passable.
The peak rises above three distinct lakes named Bolshoye, Maloye, and Krugloye, creating an unusual water-based landscape. This trio of lakes adds a special character to an otherwise isolated part of the region.
