Khakassia, Republic in southern Siberia, Russia
Khakassia is a republic in southern Siberia within Russia, stretching roughly 460 kilometers from north to south. The area includes mountain ranges, wide steppe landscapes, and river courses that together form a varied geography.
The area formed the center of the Yenisei Kyrgyz state from the 6th century onward, recognized as a major power in the region. During the reign of Peter the Great, it became part of the Russian Empire and lost its former political autonomy.
The Khakas perform throat singing and mouth harp music as living expressions of their identity, heard at local gatherings and community events. During summer, families come together for Yhyakh celebrations, sharing traditional foods and dancing outdoors under the open sky.
Mountainous areas concentrate in the south, while the northern part transitions into flatter steppe landscapes accessible on foot or by vehicle. The cities of Abakan and Chernogorsk serve as starting points for tours into the surrounding natural areas.
The Khakassky Nature Reserve shelters brown bears, wolves, and sable in habitats ranging from mountain slopes to river valleys. Visitors can observe wildlife along marked trails without entering sensitive breeding zones.
