Karaugom Glacier, Large valley glacier in North Ossetia, Russia.
Karaugom Glacier is a large valley glacier in the Caucasus that extends approximately 13 kilometers and originates at roughly 4200 meters elevation near Gora Uilpata. The formation stretches across multiple elevations from its upper reaches down to the lower alpine valleys.
The glacier experienced significant retreat between 1987 and 2004, pulling back approximately 600 meters from its previous position. This recession reflects a broader pattern of glacial decline affecting the entire Caucasus region.
The glacier carries different names across the region: Lednik Karaugom in Russian and Къæрæугомы цъити in Ossetian, reflecting the local linguistic heritage.
Access to the glacier follows established mountain trails through the valleys, with the best viewpoints located between 2500 and 3500 meters elevation. The journey requires solid physical fitness and mountain hiking experience, particularly for the upper sections.
A striking icefall separates the upper accumulation zone above 3500 meters from the lower glacier tongue beginning at 2500 meters. This separation creates a dramatic topographic division that visually segments the glacier into distinct zones.
