Tivoli Castle, Manor house in Rožnik District, Ljubljana, Slovenia
Tivoli Castle is a white manor house situated at the end of Jakopič Promenade in Tivoli Park, featuring a Neoclassical facade with balanced windows and decorative architectural details. The building displays the clean proportions and restrained ornamentation typical of this style period.
The current structure was built in the 17th century on the ruins of a Renaissance fortress, following the destruction of an earlier defensive tower in 1440. The manor underwent several modifications over subsequent centuries as it adapted to the needs of its residents.
The mansion houses the International Centre of Graphic Arts, which displays works that shaped Slovenia's visual culture after World War II. Visitors can engage with this collection and understand how artists responded to and helped define the country's artistic direction during this period.
The mansion opens regularly for exhibitions and provides accessible parking spaces along with wheelchair-accessible pathways for visitors with limited mobility. The park location makes it easy to reach, and visitors can combine their visit with a walk through the surrounding gardens.
Four cast iron dog sculptures by sculptor Anton Fernkorn guard the mansion's entrance, with a local legend surrounding their supposedly missing tongues. These curious sentries remain an overlooked detail despite being one of the most distinctive features visitors can spot.
