Kotlový štít, Mountain summit in High Tatras, Slovakia.
Mały Gerlach, also called Kotlový štít, is a granite summit in the High Tatras standing at 2,655 meters (8,711 feet). The peak is part of a chain of rocky mountains known for steep faces and exposed climbing terrain.
Climbers first reached the summit in 1834, led by Johann Still along with local hunters who knew the mountain well. This early ascent opened the peak to further mountaineering interest in the region.
The peak is known by multiple names across the languages of neighboring countries, showing how many people have lived near these mountains over time. Local hikers and climbers often use different names depending on their background.
Only climbers who are members of recognized mountaineering organizations or climbing with certified guides can attempt this peak. Good climbing gear and proper alpine experience are necessary for the exposure and rock terrain found on the route.
Snow remains on the peak throughout all seasons, which changes how climbers need to approach their ascent depending on the time of year. Winter conditions can persist well into spring, making timing an important part of planning any visit.
